That way, if you don't understand something, you can know *what* you are not understanding and why not (perhaps it is some obscure idiom, some strange pronunciation, etc.) Anyway, both methods have probably advantages and disadvantages. Watching movies with English subtitles can be better if you prefer to understand what is *happening* in the movie. So, it could be more motivating, specially for beginners.
